The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

War, astride a red steed with sword held high;
Famine, riding a black mount and holding a pair of scales;
Pestilence, atop a white stallion and wielding a bow;
Death on a pale horse holding nothing.

These gods have always existed and are worshiped, feared and revered across the Dragon Empire. One or two of them always had a hand in the end of an Age; sometimes Pestilence would unleash an epidemic across the land, sometimes War would raze everything to the ground. The gods use the icons as their agents in the world to bring their plans to fruition.

People have worshiped and sought to appease these gods since ancient times as a kind of insurance (much in the way some cultures in the real world paid respects to a smallpox god in the hopes of avoiding the disease). These are certainly dark gods, but views differ on whether they are actually evil — except for War, all are natural phenomena (that might be why War comes across as a bit of a bastard in the literature). Meanwhile, the Cult of the Four Horsemen considers them to be the different aspects of the greater phenomenon called the End.
